Amid piling reports of recession, unemployment is fast becoming a national crisis. The national Employment Law Project made a public request on Nov 17 that unemployed people should speak with their corresponding Senators’ offices or call 1-800-473-6711 so as to get assistance in passing the Unemployment Compensation Extension Act of 2008.
It seems this request has bore some fruits since the senate approved unemployment insurance extension for a period of another seven weeks in case of unemployed workers currently not receiving any benefits. Additionally, for states in which the unemployment rate is currently exceeding 6%, the unemployment insurance has been extended for a total of 20 weeks in case of persons not receiving any current benefits.
Although these measures were speculated since the current recession ridden economy is making it hard the control the unemployment rate in a large number of sectors .
